Claud Edwin “Big Ed” Sartain, 74, of Jasper, passed away Saturday, July 2, 2022, at his residence after an extended illness with Parkinson’s Disease as a result of Agent Orange. Family will receive friends Wednesday, July 6, 2022, from 12:30 pm until 2 p.m. at Northside Baptist Church. Service will follow at 2 p.m. Burial will be at Providence Cemetery in Oakman. David Byrd will officiate.
Ed was raised in Oakman where he also attended school and excelled in basketball. He was an Army veteran who served in Vietnam in 1969-1970, as a helicopter mechanic. He attended Walker College then transferred to the University of Alabama where he graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering. He and his little family then returned to Walker County where he began working with Drummond Coal Company until retirement. He enjoyed golfing and was a master craftsman with wood. He loved his Savior and enjoyed serving Him at Northside Baptist Church, where he worked in Sunday School in the 2 year old department. The children loved his calm and loving demeanor. He was known for sharing Smarties candy with the children and youth every Sunday.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Claud F. and Irma Hathcote Sartain and siblings, Bill Sartain (Lois), Betty Thomas (Marcel), Sam Sartain (Tallulah), Carolyn Brown (Bill), Ray Sartain (Charlotte), and Ina Walton (Hugh Don).
He is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca Craven Sartain; daughters, Sandy Forman (Jay) and Ashley Laird (Matthew); 4 sidekick grandsons, Jackson Curtis Forman, Casey Edwin Forman, Matthew Branton Laird II, and Wyn Sartain Laird; in-laws, Spence and Debra Tuggle who were like siblings; and many beloved nephews and nieces and special life-long friend, Bill Hyde. The family would like to extend a sincere thanks to Visiting Angels, especially, Renea Cain, Brandy Harrison, and Randy Colvin. We are also extremely grateful for Comfort Care and the care that they provided over the past several weeks.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Northside Baptist Church preschool department or Wounded Warrior Project.
