Wilbur, born to Jack and Ethel Hurst on February 15th, 1934 in Palatka, Florida, was a member of the Baptist church from a very young age. Wilbur participated in the church choir at Jacksonville Baptist Temple, taught Sunday School, and was also a Deacon. Wilbur joined Sun Coast Church in the 90’s and followed his passion as a member of that choir and serving as a Deacon.
Wilbur loved landscaping and spent many hours on his riding lawnmower cutting lawns for his neighbors and church. His favorite activates were attending dirt track races, watching NASCAR, following the Sun’s baseball games, and planting flowers.
After graduation, Wilbur joined the U.S. Army on November 19, 1956 and served over five years as a Military Policeman at Fort Benning, Georgia, rising to the rank of Sp4. When he left the service he returned with his family to Jacksonville, Florida and was employed by Simmons Beautyrest Company, advancing to the position of Shipping Manager, retiring after 30+ years.
Wilbur met his wife, Mary Shaw, and was married August 14, 1954 and went on to have one daughter, Deborah. After Mary’s passing in 1992 he met Rosa Mae Morris and was married July 24, 2000.
Wilbur joins his first wife Mary, his parents, Jack and Ethel, and sister, Jackie in Heaven. He is survived by his wife, Rosa, his daughter, Deborah, his son-in-law Steven, his brother-in-law Claude Belcher, his niece Karen James, his grandchildren Christopher, and Theresa, and his great-grandchildren, Alexis, Noah, and Temperance.
Family, friends, and others whose lives Wilbur touched are invited to The Church at Sun Coast, 4200 Georgetown Dr, Jacksonville, from 9 – 11 AM on Thursday, April 25, 2024 for visitation. A funeral service for Wilbur will begin at 11:15. Burial will follow at 1 PM at Riverside Memorial Park, 7242 Normandy Boulevard, Jacksonville, Florida. Fellowship, with meal, served following at The Church at Sun Coast, everyone is welcome.
