Cdr. Paul D. (Dave) Koburg Thomsen, USN (Ret.), passed away peacefully at his home with his wife Patricia Bales-Thomsen, his daughters, Janet C. Bales-Thomsen, A. Christine Thomsen and his caregiver and friend Wanda Lopez and family friend Julie A. Scheck at his side on February 24, 2011. Cdr. Thomsen was born in Los Angeles, CA on April 4, 1929. He enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 as a corman and worked his way up to Commander after graduating from Berkley University in CA. He was in the Medical Service Corps, serving at bases throughout the United States, Japan, Korea and Italy. He received numerous awards and Navy commendations. He was a veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict. His final tour of duty was attached to the Marine Corp at Paris Island, SC where he was responsible for the reorganization of their hospitals and Medical Service Corp. Upon his naval retirement, after 31 years of service, he went to work as administrator of University Medical Center and retired under Shands Jacksonville with 15 years of service there.
He is also survived by his sons Paul G. Thomsen and Christian J. Thomsen, both of St. Louis, MO, his daughter, Le Don A. Thomsen Kieslich (Dowd) of Middleburg, FL, three grandchildren, Kelly M. Kieslich of Gainesville, FL, Zachary J. Kieslich of Middleburg, FL and Jasmine A. Perkins of Jacksonville, FL. Additional survivors include his sister, Helene Layton of San Juan Capistrano, CA, a brother, Martin Thomsen of Phoenix, AZ, his mother-in-law and dear friend, Louella Peck Bales of Jacksonville, FL and a host of nieces and nephews throughout the US.
Cdr. Thomsen was pre deceased by his first wife, Marie Fontenot Thomsen.
Visitation will be held Monday, February 28 form 6 – 8 pm at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 4115 Hendricks Ave., Jacksonville, FL. The funeral will be Tuesday, March 1 at 11:00 am in the chapel at the funeral home. Full military honors will follow the service.
