Born in Utica, NY on December 11, 1950, Mike was the son of the late Edward and Mary Chanatry. He graduated from Notre Dame High School, then pursued his studies at SUNY Albany and the University of Buffalo where he received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery. Mike continued his dental education at the University of Florida where he received his post doctorate degree in Periodontics in 1983 and practiced in Jacksonville, FL from 1983 to 2016.
In 1977, he united with Heidi Halmi from Edinboro, PA and shared 47 loving years. They were partners, shared core family values and virtues, and loved adventurous travel with great friends. Mike loved the game of golf, skiing, relaxing at Oneida lake, eating Arabic food, playing with his dogs, and spending time with his family. But he will best be remembered as a kind, soft spoken individual, who provided exceptional care and leadership to his patients, friends, and family. When he spoke, people listened, and he was admired by his professional peers, friends, and particularly his family for his actions, generosity, and wisdom.
He supported organized dentistry by serving as President of the Florida Association of Periodontists (2005-6) and NE Florida Dental Society 2010-2011. He also served in a leadership role for the Florida Mission of Mercy, a large-scale professional dental event that provides care to the underserved. As a member of San Jose Country Club, Mike also served on the board and enjoyed many hours on the course with his golf buddies.
Michael was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Mary Chanatry, in laws Esther and Curly (Steven) Halmi, Lee & Scott Halmi. He leaves behind his wife Heidi, son Dr. Michael (Erin) Chanatry, daughter Ali (Blake) Powers and grandchildren Nolan and Christian Chanatry, Blakely and Skyler Powers. He is also survived by his family Danyse (Ralph) Fusco, New Hartford, NY, Ed (Marie) Chanatry, West Chester, PA., Rosanne (William Fallon), Hobe Sound, FL, Mary Lou (Greg) Boyer, Plano, TX, John (Patti) Chanatry, Mount Airy, MD, and Bob (Sally) Halmi, Edinboro, PA. Mike also leaves many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins all of whom grew up knowing, admiring and enjoying his conversations on golf, investing or dental advice!
A Celebration of Life will be held for Michael on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at 10:00am at St Joseph's Catholic Church, 11757 Old St Augustine Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32258.
