Margaret Farrell Twomey, born on June 2, 1916 to Maurice Lewis and Mary Coleman Farrell in Columbia SC, died peacefully on January 2, 2023 at Still Hopes Retirement Community. Margaret attended Columbia College and graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1937. She was president of the Co-Ed Association and a member of the Chi Omega sorority. After graduation, she served as secretary to the USC Athletic Director and met her husband Ted there, marrying in 1941. They lived in Gainesville Fl, Mobile, AL, and Atlanta, GA, before settling in Jacksonville, FL in 1955, where she lived for more than 50 years. She was deeply committed to her husband, son Tim and extended family, as well as a popular elementary school teacher, an active member of Assumption Catholic Church, a long-time volunteer at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, and a life-long USC Gamecocks fan. She moved back to Columbia, her hometown, in 2013, and lived happily for many years at Still Hopes.
Margaret was an unfailingly optimistic person with a sparkling sense of humor, and maintained an abiding Catholic faith throughout her life. She had an adventuresome spirit, earning her pilot’s license in 1938 and flying with her co-pilot husband on numerous trips. She held a festive July 4th flag-raising ceremony in her front yard that was a neighborhood highlight for decades, and initiated the same tradition when she moved to Still Hopes. Margaret found joy in so many things including chocolate, the beach, football, and cocktail hour, and was truly adored by her many friends and family.
Margaret is survived by a number of devoted nieces and nephews including Marc Theilman (Lee Ann) of Mesa, AZ; Katherine Anderson (Craig Childs) of Columbia, SC; Mary Coleman Ragsdale (Karen Popp), John Ragsdale (Luna), M.D., and Margaret Ragsdale Ancona (Rocco) of Chapel Hill, NC; and Caroline Ward (Dan) of Atlanta, GA.
She was predeceased by her husband Ted, her only child, Timothy Jr., as well as her eight brothers and sisters.
