Went to her eternal rest on 02/27/2024. She is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Robert Rubens, her parents Harry & Ruth Slutzah, nephew Martin Gottlieb, brother-in-law Murray Rubens, and most recently her brother Steven Slutzah.
Mrs. Rubens spent her life helping others and taking care of animals. She was an animal whisper who could tame even the wildest of animals just by her presence. Professionally, Mrs. Rubens was a Registered Nurse who specialized in geriatric and psychiatric care. She was appointed by both former governors, Bob Martinez, and Lawton Chiles as the chairperson for the state wide Human Rights Advocacy Committee, speaking on behalf of those with mental health and substance-abuse diagnosis.
She was also a member of the Jacksonville area “Operation Spot Check”, a group of appointed volunteers who ensured residents in mental health assisted living facility received proper care in a clean environment. For the last 18 years of her career, Mrs. Rubens was the Executive Director for Mt. Carmel Gardens, providing safe - affordable housing while enhancing the lives for seniors and people with disabilities.
To mourn her loss, she leaves behind her eldest son Scott (Mary) Rubens of Chantilly, VA: son Mark and twin granddaughters Laurel Rubens of Washington, DC & Kaitlyn Rubens of Chantilly, VA; her brother-in-laws George (Ellen) Rubens and Arthur (Becky) Rubens of Naples, FL and sister-in-laws Debbie (Mel) Gottlieb, Myrna Rubens of Plantation, FL, Adrienne Slutzah of Northridge, CA & her faithful service dog, Desi. She was loved by her many nieces and nephews.
A special thank you to Tara Crockett for her love and support.
