Lillian Burney Strickland

Lillian Burney Strickland, 85, of Jacksonville FL, passed on June 28, 2023. Mrs. Strickland was born in Green Cove Springs FL to Hewitt Percy Burney and Helen Oma Minton. The family later settled in Ft. Pierce FL where Mrs. Strickland attended Parkview Baptist church and graduated from Dan McCarty high school in 1955. Afterwards she attended Bessie Tift College in Forsyth GA earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education in 1959.

Mrs. Strickland loved teaching and worked in the Duval County Public School system for 35 years instructing students at Englewood Elementary and Crown Point Elementary from which she retired in 1995. She was a devoted member of Englewood Christian Church where she served the Lord for decades, an influential leader in the Christian Women’s Fellowship program and a Sunday School teacher.

On June 24, 1961 she married Robert Dowling Strickland of Ft. Pierce FL and the newlyweds chose to reside in Jacksonville. A deeply devoted couple, they were married for 60 years until his death in January 2022. She is survived by her children Robert Michael Strickland, Philip Ward Strickland and Marcie Strickland Metcalf; grandchildren Jessica McConnell, Asa Taylor Strickland, Sarah Kirby and Noah Strickland; great grandchildren Lucy and Adam Meginnis and Ella McConnell. Mrs. Strickland is also survived by her sister Carolyn Hutchinson, brother Joseph Burney, brothers in law James and Adrian Strickland, sister in law Betty Butts, plus numerous nieces and nephews who lovingly referred to her as Aunt Ninnie.

In later years Mrs. Strickland remained a constant to her husband, family, and church as well as her Hickson Road life long friends and neighbors. She enjoyed savoring a cup of coffee, reading, waterskiing, sewing, puzzles, riding motorcycles, people watching, and all kinds of adventures.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, July 15 at 1:30 PM at Englewood Christian Church, located at 4316 Barnes Rd, Jacksonville Fl 32207.
