John Fountain Shriver, III passed away on the afternoon of April 21st, 2024 at St. Vincent's Southside Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida with his loving wife at his side following a lengthy medical condition worsened by a recent fall.
John was born in Jacksonville, Florida. He spent several of his teenage and high school years in Nashville, TN while living with his father and step-mother. Following graduation from high school he enlisted in the United States Navy. During his service in the U.S. Navy he resided in cities like of San Diego, CA; Chicago, IL; Key West, FL and back to Jacksonville, FL. He was assigned to the submarine USS Penguin ASR-12 and then USS McCaffery (DD860). His most notable tours of duty included participating in the Cuban Blockade during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 followed by serving reconnaissance missions to retrieve returning space capsules and or other NASA rocket materials. This service was close to his heart since his Step Father worked for NASA at the time.
Upon returning to civilian life he worked at the Jacksonville Ship Yards; Newton's School Equipment Company as the Purchasing Manager; NAS JAX's NEDEP utilizing his accounting and inventory control experience. Being a Multi-gallon blood donor opened an opportunity to work for the Florida-Georgia Blood Alliance as their Procurement Manager where he retired. John followed the footsteps of his daughter and his father before him to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office where he worked as a Senior Bailiff before retiring for good.
He enjoyed being a Brother, Husband, Father, Grandfather, traveling and watching baseball, especially the Kansas City Royals and the Jacksonville Suns as a many year season ticket holder and booster. He also served as a Troop Leader for the Boy Scouts. Of all the titles and positions over the years his absolute favorite was being bestowed Great-Grandfather.
John was preceded in death by his parents John F. Shriver II and Kitty Shaw and by his first wife of 47 years, Carolyn P. Shriver. He is survived by his current wife, best friend and travel partner of 15 years, Arlyss S. Shriver; his Daughter Carol Suzanne Kirkpatrick (Jerry), granddaughter Ashley M. Kirkpatrick (Robert Gay), great grandson Clayton Eugene Gay; his Son John Christopher Shriver, granddaughter Anne Dawson (Andie) Shriver, and grandson Powell Jacob (Jay) Shriver; and his brother Dr. Michael (Mike) Douglas Hampton of Orlando.
Viewing and visitation with the family will begin 1:00 pm on Saturday April 27th 2024, followed by a memorial service beginning at 2:00 pm at Hardage-Giddens Riverside Memorial Park Funeral Home. 7242 Normandy Blvd. Jacksonville, FL 32205.
