JEAN SELDOMRIDGE PRICE passed away peacefully on Friday, June 10, 2011. Ms Price was a remarkable lady who had accomplished a lot of outstanding goals in her life. Jean was born on October 23, 1920 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the only child of Mary Seldomridge Price and only grandchild of Jacob F. and Minnie C. Seldomridge. She grew up in Pennsylvania, attended Shippen school (now Lancaster Country Day School,), graduated cum laude from Bryn Mawr College in 1941 and received her Master of Social Work degree (MSW) from the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Work in 1959.
She was a member of the Jacksonville Chapter D.A.R. (Daughters of the American Revolution) and the Timucuan Chapter, D.A.C. (Daughters of the American Colonists) of which she was a past Regent. Even after her second retirement, she continued her contributions to her community as a volunteer for the United Way of Northeast Florida by doing Grant reviews and working on establishment of programs for the elderly. She was appointed to the Mayor's Council on Elderly Affairs where she served for several years. In 2009 she received a 'Volunteer of the Year' award at a city-wide ceremony.
Her Pennsylvania work history included such credits as writing political editorials for a local newspaper, being a school teacher for a while, and retiring from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (i.e. State Sales Tax Department and various Social Services Programs). She and her mother moved to Jacksonville, Florida, in the mid-1970's to join The Children's Home Society of Florida's Corporate Office as Director of Social Services. During her almost 20 years with CHS she had also served twice as interim President. Her many years of doing social service work for children and families in need throughout Florida brought her many accolades and recognitions. There is no way to count the number of people to whom she had become a mentor, counselor and friend over nearly 40 years of social service work spread through only two states
