Helen was born in Fairmont, West Virginia on November 28, 1936 to Marguerite Naomi Slocum
Steele and Arlis Denzil Steele. Helen graduated Fairmont High School and attended Fairmont State College for one year before she was married. After Army service, Helen’s family, which now consisted of 5 Children, moved to Miami. While living in Miami, she was very active in the Parent Teacher Association and the Junior League of Miami and was a member of Riviera Country Club. Helen worked for Eastern Airlines and retired in 1988 then later moved to Jacksonville in 1991.
In the fall of 1992, Helen met Fred Kent and they married ten months later. Fred was semi-retired which gave them many opportunities to travel, to sail, and to vacation in the Bahamas.
Helen had wonderful memories of her trips to Switzerland, Costa Rica, the Canadian Rockies, Alaska, France and of sailing the Caribbean. Helen was an active member of the Women of the Church and enjoyed many friendships.
Helen is survived by her husband of 21 years, Fred H. Kent, Jr., her sister, Carolyn Sue Walters (Ben) of Murrells Inlet, SC and her brother, William D. Steele (Robin) of Kissimmee, FL, her five children, Nathaniel David Helmick III (Nancy), Timothy Scott Pierpont Helmick (Maria), Hermione Ann Kovacevich (Vladimir), Caroline Helmick Sory and Robert William Helmick (Kerri), eight grandchildren, Emily David, Paige, Scott, Mallorie, Jack, Kate and Kameron and one great grandchild, Olivia.
Her family would like to thank the caring staff at Arbor Terrace Memory Care and the wonderful nurses that cared for Helen from Community Hospice. A Church service for Helen will be at Riverside Presbyterian Church on ……….. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations in Helen’s name be made to Community Hospice of Jacksonville
