Harold Roy Hines, who spent his career as a college administrator in both Michigan and Florida, died at home in Jacksonville, Florida on November 16, 2023. He was 85. Harold was born on November 25, 1937 in Detroit, Michigan, the youngest of five children by Irene Edmunds Hines and Charles Hines. Harold was raised in Ypsilanti, Michigan, where he graduated from high school in 1955. He subsequently graduated from Eastern Michigan University, receiving his B.S., M.A., and Ed. S. degrees.
Shortly after marrying the love of his life, Rosemary Patrina, on October 7, 1961, he entered the US Army as a Chaplain’s Assistant. The couple relocated to Jacksonville in 1982, where they both later retired from Florida Community College as administrators. During their marriage, they travelled extensively and were active in many organizations, including Friends of the Jacksonville Public Library and Friends of the Southeast St. John’s County Public Library. Harold was also an active member of the Freemasons, Shriners, and Scottish Rite. He also supported Rosemary in the Order of the Eastern Star. They attended the Episcopalian Church of Our Savior, near their residence in Fruit Cove, Florida. They greatly enjoyed their time together at their St. Augustine Beach condo.
After more than 45 years of marriage, Rosemary passed on May 22, 2007. Harold honored her memory over the final 16 years of his life.
Harold is survived by 14 nieces and nephews, as well as sister-in-law Catherine Hines of Brighton, Michigan.
Family and friends will gather on Friday, December 8, 2023, at 10 A.M. at Stark Funeral Professionals, Ypsilanti, with burial to immediately follow at Highland Cemetery in Ypsilanti.
