He was a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School and attended Gordon Military College. After serving in WWII in the Coast Guard as a merchant marine officer he continued with the Maritime service and was a St. John's River pilot. Forbes formed Grace & Company, Inc. with his brothers where he served as Vice President and Director of Operations.
In his youth he was a gifted singer and performed with Riverside Presbyterian Church Choir as an adult. Forbes was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal and the Florida Yacht Club. He flew numerous trips in his Cessna prop plane and traveled the world on a cargo ship. In recent years he was active with Robert E. Lee High School Alumni Association and the Jacksonville Woodworkers Club. He patented a gate opener, created and invented numerous practical devices.
Forbes was predeceased by brothers Walter and Elroy Grace as well as sons Dean Grace and Rae Simpson.
He leaves his wife Anne, brother and sister-in-law Robert and Betty Grace; sister-in-law’s Dudley Grace and Jaunelle Grace; children Mary & Bill Hart, Mona & Bland Cologne, Amy & Jim Dyson, and Banks Simpson; 8 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by family and many close friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church 4129 Oxford Ave, Jacksonville, FL 32210 at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Hardage Giddens 729 S Edgewood Ave Jax. Fl. 32205.
