Edward Albert Mueller passed away on April 11, 2014 after a brief illness. He was 90 years young. Born in Madison, WI, he was educated at Wisconsin and Notre Dame for his bachelor’s degree and Catholic University for Masters in Civil Engineering. He lived in Wisconsin most of his younger years and in Jacksonville for the last 41. In his career he has worked for the Highway Research Board in Washington D.C., the Department of Transportation in Tallahassee. He also was the secretary of transportation from 1970-1973 and the director of the Jacksonville Transportation Authority form 1973-1981. He then worked for Morales and Shumer, an engineering firm, until he retired in 1997. Edward was a retired Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy. He actively served from 1943-1945 and then in the Naval Reserves for about 20 years. Over the years Edward was very active in the Lutheran church. He had so many interests and hobbies, but his favorites were the Maritime Museum in Jacksonville, the local Lions club and merchant marines. He was an avid sport fan especially when it came to Wisconsin, Notre Dame and University of Florida. Ed’s real love was history, particularly steamboats and research. He has written several books and produced many DVD’s on the subject. Ed is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret “Peg” Mueller; son, Lynn Mueller (Norma); daughter, Karen Myers (Tim); grandson, Danny Mueller (Alicia); granddaughter, Melissa Moore (Matt); and three great grandchildren, Mason, Jaxson, and Elizabeth. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday (today), April 13th in Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home of Mandarin. The Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 15th in St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, 6801 Merrill Road, Jacksonville, FL 32277. Interment in Jacksonville National Cemetery will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church or the Jacksonville Maritime Museum.
