Doug was born on September 21, 1942, in Statesville, Iredell County, NC. He graduated from Central School in Iredell County in 1960.
Doug’s first worked as an electrical lineman with Western Carolina Co-op in Iredell County, NC. This continued to be his career path in Florida, and after locating to Jacksonville in 1968, he was employed by Jacksonville Electric Authority as a lineman. Over the course of 30 years with JEA Doug was promoted to a trouble-shooter, then worked as a temporary supervisor, and finished his career with the engineering department, retiring in 1998.
He became a member of Evangel Temple Assembly of God in 2005, participating in adult men’s activities such as the men’s golf tournaments and chili cook-off! A life-long sports enthusiast, he was an avid golfer (zero handicap in his middle age years), a long-time UF Gator fan and season ticket holder, a lover of NASCAR and the Atlanta Braves. A loyal Jaguar fan, Doug was a season ticket holder for over 15 years.
He also enjoyed auctions, yard sales and flea markets, always looking for a deal! Doug enjoyed traveling, whether in the U.S. or abroad, by aircraft, cruising on his motorcycle or an ocean liner or driving his RV,
but his favorite destination became western NC at Pride RV Resort in Waynesville, where he could spend time with friends and family.
Mr. Tilley was preceded in death by his parents, Charles V. and Mary (Guy) Tilley of Statesville, NC, an infant brother, his sisters and brothers-in-law Alma (Bruce) Kelley of Camden, SC, Norma (James) Foster, Jane (Dan) Waugh all of Statesville and an infant granddaughter, Terri Ann Register.
Doug is survived by his wife of over 41 years, Donnese (Greer) Tilley of Jacksonville and his brother Guy (Jo Carol) Tilley of Myrtle Beach, SC. He is also survived by his children Rhonda (Sam) Curlee of Waynesville, NC, Doug (Vickie) Tilley and Dawn (Daren) Roberts, all of Jacksonville, FL. His surviving
grandchildren are Leigh (Matt) Scovill of Kingsland, GA, Andrew Tilley of San Diego, CA, and Lindsay Diaz, Stephen Tilley, Peyton (Cheyenne), Grayson, and Brayden Roberts, all of Jacksonville, FL. Doug’s great-grandchildren are Raemon and Hayden Diaz, Addison and Logan Scovill, and Parker Tilley. Doug
has a large extended family of numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, in-laws, and a host of friends in Jacksonville, western North Carolina, and reaching across the southeastern U.S. Doug will be sorely missed.
A visitation for Douglas will be held Friday, October 22, 2021 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Hardage-Giddens, Riverside Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32205. A committal service will occur Saturday, October 23, 2021 from 11:00 AM to 11:20 AM at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery, 7242 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32205.
