Mrs. Fontenot was a native of Jacksonville, FL., She married Andrew in 1948 and accompanied him in his Air Force travels throughout his 26 year career. She enjoyed being stationed in Berlin, Germany, Upper Heyford, England, Japan and Okinawa and lived in Austin, Texas while he served his country in Vietnam.
She started her long working career in Civil Service as Secretary of the Rod and Gun Club at Upper Heyford. She rose through the ranks serving in increasingly analytical positions in planning, programming, budgeting and manpower management in four major Army commands to become a GM-15 Manpower Management Analyst working at DARCOM as Chief, Force Development Division at Ft. Meade, Maryland, and later at the Pentagon.
After retiring, Dorothy and Andrew moved to Jacksonville and became well-known real estate investors. Her life was marked by a keen business acumen, kindness, humor, and devotion to family. She was a highly creative person and over her life enjoyed various pursuits in Japanese flower arranging, crocheting, painting, creating Japanese punch pictures of thread. For many years she also wrote and published various columns for magazines on antiques, foreign culture, humor and other subjects, including real estate. She will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She is survived by her family, devoted caregivers, and friends. Throughout her life she remained "a force to be reckoned with".
A private interment will be held at Chapel Hills Memorial Gardens on St. Johns Bluff Rd. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, that memorial contributions be made in her honor to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, Inc., 4266 Sunbeam Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32257.
