Charles Hatton Liphart Jr.

Charles Hatton Liphart, Jr, 93, passed away April 18, 2022 in Jacksonville, Florida. Hatton was born December 10, 1928 in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. In 1942, when he was 14 years old, his father was transferred to Jacksonville with Hajoca Corporation, a plumbing and heating wholesaler. He graduated from Landon High School in 1946, then attended Jacksonville Junior College and The University of Florida.

On November 8, 1950, he was drafted into the Army during the Korean War. He was stationed at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and then Fort Bragg, North Carolina where he was company clerk for the M.A.S.H. training unit which was transferred to Camp Pickett Virginia near Richmond. While on leave he would visit his great uncle Reuben Liphart who suggested he visit the young people’s group on Sunday night at the Ginter Park Presbyterian Church. There he met the love of his life, Helen Mae Jackson and they were married on July 26, 1952. In 1951 he was transferred to Fort Knox, Kentucky having achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. In November of 1952 he was honorably discharged from the Army and he and his bride moved to Jacksonville, Florida. He then went to work for Charles H. Liphart and the name was changed to Charles H. Liphart & Son (Manufacturer’s Representatives). Hatton received many sales awards over the years, but was most proud of being the first person in the United States to sell One Million dollars’ worth of toilet seats in a year. In the early 70’s when they were $1.95 each, this would fill 216 trucks at 4,628 per truck. He successfully led Charles H. Liphart and Son until it was merged with Sunbelt Marketing in 1997 and he retired.

Hatton was proud of his 3 sons and having put them through college. He was a member of Southside United Methodist Church, and lived out his faith through his generous giving to churches and charities as well as serving on church and community boards.

He is predeceased by his parents, Charles H. Liphart, Sr. and Jeanette Corn Liphart; his wife, Helen J. Liphart; and his daughter, Lucy Jean Liphart. He is survived by his three sons Cary H. Liphart (Lyn) of Punta Gorda, Florida, Robert D. Liphart (Charlotte Fairchild) of Hiram, Georgia, and Alan J. Liphart (Jodi) of St. Augustine, Florida; his grandchildren Christopher C. Liphart of Atlanta, Georgia, Jennifer L. Liphart of Punta Gorda, Florida, Jalen K. Atkinson (Bryan) of Green Cove Springs, Florida, and Kayci A. Liphart of Jacksonville, Florida; great-grandchildren Liam, Logan, Ashton and Chadan; sister-in-law, Margaret Patterson; nephews Stuart Patterson (Rubette), Darry Patterson (Laurie), Brydon Jackson (Tracy), and Tony Gunn (Emily Parker); and niece, Margaret Gunn Jones (Bobby); as well as cousins Pat Criswell Van Cleave (Earl), Janet Criswell Williams (John) and Nancy Criswell Bretherick (Donald).

Services will be held at Hardage-Giddens Greenlawn Funeral Home, 4300 Beach Blvd, Jacksonville, Florida 32207, on Saturday, May 7, 2022 beginning with a visitation at 10:00 am, followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:00 am, with Rev. Alan J. Liphart officiating. Committal service to follow at Greenlawn Cemetery. Donations in lieu of flowers may be given to The Village Church, 4229 Pacetti Rd. St. Augustine, FL. 32092.
