Carolyn was born December 9, 1939 in Washington. DC, the daughter of Cecil and Nelle Kemp. She found salvation early in life, accepting Jesus Christ as her savior, and enjoyed living out her faith in service to her church and those God placed in her life.
When she was 2 years old, her family moved back to Jacksonville, Florida where she lived for the rest of her life. She graduated from Robert E. Lee High School before attending Florida State University, where she earned an undergraduate degree. While at FSU, she was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Also, as a lifelong lover of music, she played first-chair clarinet in the FSU Orchestra and the FSU Marching Band. For many years, she returned to play in the Marching Chiefs Alumni Marching Band.
Professionally, she taught as a Home Economics teacher for 22 years. She loved to use her skills to sew, cook and entertain. She was blessed with a spirit of hospitality and giving that touched many throughout her life.
Carolyn married John Ellsworth Ellis on August 6, 1960. They were blessed with three children – John, David and Debbie. She was a devoted wife, mother, neighbor and friend. She modeled for many the characteristics of a Godly wife and parent. She was an active member of New Life Christian Fellowship. Though dearly missed, she lives on in the memories of her loved ones who celebrate and find comfort in knowing she is once again whole and at peace with her Creator.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Cecil and Nelle Kemp; her step-mother, Grace Kemp; and her brother, Sonny Kemp. She is survived by her children – John II (Rhonda), David (Susan) and Debbie (Scot). In addition, she has eleven grandchildren – John III (Ashton), Alexis, Daniel (Gabi), Kelsey, Laura, Heather, Lila, Ansley, James (Penny), Michael and Christopher (Carmen). Also, she was blessed with a great grandchild, Joshua. She is also survived by her cousin, Paula Fortunas (Tim), who was more like a sister.
A Celebration of Carolyn's life will be held on Saturday, July 31, 2021. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 am. Followed by the memorial service at 11:00 am. Then. the family will have a brief graveside service. Lunch will be served to all in attendance. The Celebration will be held at Chapel Hills, 850 St. Johns Bluff Road North, Jacksonville, FL 32225.
