Beverly Louise Champion Quine, age 81, passed away on Wednesday, May 25, 2022. She was surrounded by her two daughters as her 17-year battle with cancer that originated as ovarian cancer came to an end.
Beverly was born December 22, 1940 in Jacksonville, Florida. She was the daughter of Alfred B. and Louise (Shadburn) Champion, founders of what became Champion’s Craft and Decorating Center.
After graduating from Landon High School in 1958, Beverly attended Florida State University and later graduated from Jacksonville University with a degree in elementary education. In addition to substitute teaching, she worked as an administrative assistant in the Accounting and Finance Dept. at the University of North Florida. She then spent more than 15 years as a paralegal for the Federal Government in Jacksonville’s Office of Hearing and Appeals. She retired in 2005.
Growing up in Jacksonville, Beverly studied ballet at Mervyn Rickard’s dance studio on Hendricks Avenue. Her love for dance, travel and art history stayed with her throughout her life. She often went to Maryland to spend time with her two grandsons. Her hobbies also included knitting beautiful blankets for family members and watching the Jaguars or Tiger Woods on TV. Beverly never missed a Landon reunion and always enjoyed catching up with her fellow Lions.
Beverly spent most of her life practicing her Christian faith at South Jacksonville Presbyterian Church. In recent years, she attended Geneva Presbyterian Church in Switzerland, Florida. She spent the last five years living among wonderful friends at Westminster Woods on Julington Creek.
Beverly is survived by her two daughters, Laura (Thomas) Heinle of Silver Spring, Maryland, and Linda (Chase) Barry of Jacksonville, and grandsons William and Theo Heinle and Ethan Barry. She is also survived by her sister Nancy (Dan) Rush and sister-in-law Audrey Champion, both of Jacksonville, along with several nieces and nephews and many life-long dear friends. She is predeceased by her son Franklin Quine and brother Dan Champion.
Graveside services officiated by Pastor Robert Smith of Geneva Presbyterian will be held at Oaklawn Cemetery on Saturday, June 11 at 11 a.m. A reception will follow at the Legacy Lodge.
