Daniel “Dan” Eugene Watts passed away from COVID-19 complications on September 1, 2021. He was 49 years of age. He is survived by his two sons, Daniel Watts Jr. and Eli Watts, his father, George Watts Sr., and his brother, George Watts Jr., as well as numerous cousins, lifelong friends, and extended family. Dan was a dedicated family man and a great father to his sons. His kindness and care for others collected an enormous group of friends and extended family. Dan loved to spend time with his sons out in nature surrounded by the woods or on the water. He enjoyed riding and caring for horses and loved fishing as well. Dan passed his love of nature down to his sons, and this will live on through them. When he wasn’t outside somewhere, he could be found cheering for the University of Florida Gators football team.
Besides being a good father and a good man, Dan was known for his kindness and concern for others. This is what led Dan to his career as a law enforcement officer. Dan was a police officer that worked tirelessly to improve his community, and he sacrificed a great deal for others. He began his law enforcement career with the Atlantic Beach Police Department where he served for four years. In 2002, Dan was hired by the Jacksonville Beach Police Department as a Patrol Officer. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a Detective in 2004, then transferring to Downtown CAPE in 2012. He was promoted to Corporal in 2013, and worked in Patrol until he transitioned to Detective Corporal in 2015. Dan was promoted to Sergeant in April of 2021, where he served until his passing. He also served on the SWAT team for over 10 years. Dan was a decorated, veteran member of the Jacksonville Beach Police Department, and he will be greatly missed.
