Joseph C. Brown, Jr. “Brownie”, 96, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 19, 2014. He was born February 11, 1917 in Bainbridge, Georgia to Joseph C. Brown, Sr and Carrie Sasser Brown. Brownie is survived by his son, Joseph C. Brown III, 3 brothers David E. Brown, Jimmy Brown and Porter G. Brown, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Lenora H. Brown, his sister Teresa Tanner, and his brother Robert C. “Pete” Brown.
Brownie was an honorably discharged veteran of the US Navy and World War II. He served at Mayport Naval Station and in the Pacific. Brownie’s military service was followed by more than 50 years as a commercial fisherman and was a master net maker. He also worked at Mayport Naval Station in security police from 1956-1979. Brownie acted as the caretaker of the Mayport Cemetery for 40 years.
He was a lifetime member of the VFW Jacksonville Beach Post 3270, a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Brownie’s funeral mass will be held 10am, Friday, January 24 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 2400 Mayport Rd. Atlantic Beach, FL. Burial will follow at the Mayport Cemetery at the end of Mayport Landing Dr. in Atlantic Beach, FL.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Brownie’s honor to the Mayport Cemetery Association, 1441 Palmer St. Mayport, FL 32233.
