Evelyn Frances Palmer, 83, originally of City Island, New York, died peacefully surrounded by her family after an extended illness on August 8, 2012. Evelyn, executive secretary for the New York Daily News, was voted Miss Page One of 1949 from the seven daily New York City newspapers. She was a profound Catholic, adoring wife, devoted mother and loving grandmother. She was a founding member of the Jacksonville Chapter of Legatus, member of the Founders Society of Duke University and enthusiastic supporter and benefactor of the Jacksonville Symphony, Our Lady Star of the Sea Church and Palmer Catholic Academy. She is survived by her devoted husband of 56 years Valfrid Edward Palmer; sister Marie Hanlon (John); children Glenn Palmer (Shannon), Karen Palmer Haines (Philip), Mary Palmer Taylor (Fitzhugh); and grandchildren Erin Haines Vu (Phong), Michelle Haines, Bridget Haines, Sean Palmer, Molly Palmer, Corey Palmer, Oliver Taylor, Campbell Taylor, and Margaret Taylor. She was preceded in death by her son Valfrid Joseph Palmer, sister Bonnie Jackson and brother Thomas McDonagh. Catholic Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Monday, August 13, 2012, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Ponte Vedra Beach. The family will receive friends at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 1701 Beach Boulevard in Jacksonville Beach on Sunday, August 12, 2012, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to the Palmer Catholic Academy, 4889 Palm Valley Road in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida 32082.
