Evelyn Marie Norwood Basco, known to most as "Granny", went to be with Jesus Sunday morning, February 23, 2014 while sleeping peacefully. She left many saddened hearts but also enough wonderful and precious memories to last us for all eternity. Born in Madison County, Alabama on October 31, 1927 the second of eight children, Evelyn traveled around the country first as the daughter of a carpenter/share-cropper and later as the wife of a U.S. Navy sailor. She first moved to the beaches area in January 1962 when her husband transferred to a ship at Naval Station Mayport.
Evelyn never met a stranger and was ever ready to help her neighbors and friends in a time of need. Her home was always open and visitors never left hungry. She was renowned for her cooking skill and the ability to quickly pull together a hearty feast, always served with hot homemade biscuits or "jailhouse" rolls. During a two-week power outage following Hurricane Dora in 1964 she provided hot meals to many using an old gas range she kept on her back porch. She held several jobs during her 50+ years in the area including waitressing at the Fisherman's Net Restaurant in the Atlantic Beach Hotel and at the Sea Turtle Restaurant as well as providing childcare through local companies. Evelyn loved being active and busy.
As a member of Hogan Baptist Church for more than 30 years, she served as leader of its Baptist Woman’s Missionary Union as well as working the “Storehouse” clothing shop, joining the pastor for home and hospital visitations, and providing transportation for those in need. She also enjoyed playing games, singing gospel music, traveling and just about anything that involved being with other people. At home when she wasn't cooking she could be found gardening, crocheting or sewing with many of her resulting projects donated to benefit others.
She is survived by her five children: daughter, Betty R. Basco Roebuck of Jacksonville; son, Joe F. Basco (Diane) of Cumming, Georgia; daughter, Patty Jo Basco Parks (Mark) of Ooltewah, Tennessee, son, Dale McKinley of Central Florida; son, Bob McKinley (Kathy) of Windermere, Florida; 16 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren; brothers, Ronald Norwood of Crystal River, Florida, and George Norwood (Connie) of Riverview, Florida; sisters, Laura Norwood Lutterman (Al) of Georgetown, Texas, and Peggy Norwood Richardson of Mount Holly, North Carolina, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 40 years Joe Maxie Basco; brother, Donald Norwood; sisters, Helen Norwood Perkins and Dorothy Anne Norwood Minnick; and her parents, Dorsey W. and Ethel (McNeely) Norwood.
Her funeral is being arranged by Beaches Chapel/Hardage-Giddens (904-249-2374) at 1701 Beach Boulevard in Jacksonville Beach. A visitation is set for 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, February 26, and her funeral service will be held at the funeral home Thursday morning February 27 at 10:30 a.m. Officiating at her funeral will be the Reverend Jerry Brown, MDiv, of Villa Rica, Georgia. She will be buried at Beaches Memorial Park, 1500 Main Street, Atlantic Beach, following the service.
Evelyn's family is very grateful for all the calls, emails, notes, visits, prayers and thoughts sent our way.
