Betty Boone Bracewell passed away at home on September 10, 2014 under the care of Vitas Innovation Hospice Care. Betty was born on June 3, 1935 in Vienna, GA to Loye and Gussie Dorough. Since the age of four, she resided in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. She graduated from Fletcher Senior High School in 1953. After high school, she worked for Prudential Insurance Company. Her career as the first female police officer in Jacksonville Beach began in 1956. After retiring in 1986 with 30 years of service, she worked part time as a secretary for the Visiting Nursing Association and then for Watchcare Adult Day Care.
Betty was a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Police, a member of Jacksonville Beach Elks Club as one of the DOES and the Moose Club. Betty was a board member for Hubbard House for many years.
Betty was an avid gardener, loved to travel and bird watch. She was a great fan of the Georgia Bulldogs. She married her husband Jimmy, on January 17, 1987 and their blended family had four adult children and spouses. Betty was preceded in death by a brother, Joe L. Dorough. She leaves to cherish her memory, husband, Jimmy; daughter, Debra Corbitt (Johnny); son, Stephen Boone (Renee); brother, Robert Dorough (Joanne); stepson, John Bracewell (Kathy); stepson, Michael Bracewell; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 3 pm at Hardage Giddens Funeral Home, 1701 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach with burial at H. Warren Smith cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Friday, September 12, 2014 at the Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Vitas Innovative Hospice Care and to the American Heart Association.
