Alvin Aaron Blount Sr.

On Saturday, September 27, 2014, the angels called our beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, godfather, uncle, cousin and friend to be with the Lord.

Alvin was born on March 23, 1944, in Smithfield, VA, to the late Elmo and Sadie H. Blount. He accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior at an early age at Little Zion Baptist Church, and was a 1962 graduate of Westside High School. He holds a Bachelor Degree in Management from Edward Waters College.

He joined the Navy right out of High School as a non-commissioned enlisted seaman. During his Navy tenure, he advanced through 15 military ranks and attended 23 professional, leadership and management schools. He was a “Mustang”retiring after 25 years of service as a Lieutenant. Alvin received nine military service medals, one of which was presented for personal achievement for his software design of the Administrative Management Training Program for the U.S. Mid-Pacific Fleet. He entered into the race relations education field in 1972 as a Race Relation Facilitator after graduating from the Defense Race Relations Institute, Cocoa Beach, FL. As a result of that training, Alvin was involved in the formulation of the Navy's initial Equal Opportunity and Human Goals Programs. He later also formed Human Specialties, a human resources consulting firm. Among other accomplishments, in 1991 he submitted an entry in the Eli Wiesel Prize for Ethics, an essay entitled “Creating An Ethical Society”. He also was working on the final stages of his book entitled “America: Trapped in Fear, Ignorance and Mistrust”.

Alvin was a diligent employee and part owner of the Barbecue Center, one of the initial stores in the Jacksonville Landing. He was involved in organizing and establishing the first One Hundred Black Men of Jacksonville organization. And he was a community servant to many not for profit and community outreach programs.

Other than his parents, Alvin was preceded in death by his brother, Elmo P. Blount and sister, Lillie Blount Green. He leaves to rejoice in his memory, his grade school sweetheart, Evelyn Hamlin Blount; sons, Alvin A. Blount, II (Ella) and Ian Kelly Blount (Kay); sister, Ira Inez Glover, Philadelphia, Pa.; brother, James E. Blount (Barbara), Oxon Hill, Maryland; two aunts, Roselia Major, Smithfield, Va, and Gladys Hawkins, Hampton, Va; brothers-in-law, Walter Hamlin, Jr. (Helen) and Charles Green, Sr., Smithfield, Va; grandchildren, Ashley Marie, Alvin A. III, Amber Nalani and Ian Channon Blount, all of Jacksonville; goddaughter, Rachel White, Jacksonville Beach, Fl; godson, Joshua McMillan, Jacksonville Beach, Fl; nieces, Felicia Glover, Philadelphia, Pa, Jacqueline Blount, Upper Marlboro, Md, Michelle Blount, Philadelphia, PA, Fonda Blount-Beander, Ft. Washington, Md, Kendra Hamlin-Saunders and Kayla Hamlin, Smithfield, Va; nephews, Charles Green, II, Atlanta, Ga, Brian Blount, Manassas, Va, and Terry Blount, Oxon Hill, Md.
