Services for Dr. Roy A. Douglass, Jr. will be Saturday, December 19 at 2 pm. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with Dr. Barry Scott officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens. Beginning at 12:30 pm., the family will receive friends at the church prior to the service.
Dr. Douglass was born August 17, 1923 in Huntingdon, TN, the son of Dr. Roy A. Douglass and Ellena Webb Douglass. He graduated from Vanderbilt Medical School in 1946 and served two years of post-graduate training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Vanderbilt University Hospital and two years University of Cincinnati Hospital. In addition, Dr. Douglass served in the US Army Occupation Force in Germany from 1947–1949. He was a Diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
In 1952, Dr. Douglass joined The Jackson Clinic as its first trained and certified OB-Gyn physician. After 31 years at The Jackson Clinic, he joined the faculty of UT Family Medicine until his retirement in 1995.
During his medical career, he and his beloved wife Carol also served on month-long mission trips to Nicaragua, Swaziland, Navaho Indian Reservation, Nigeria and Gaza.
Dr. Douglass is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Jean Douglass Markham and dear friend Lula Bell Swift.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Carol Woelflin Douglass, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren: David W. Douglass of Eastsound, WA; Suzanne W. Douglass of Collierville, TN; Beth D. Vornbrock, husband Robert of Piperton, TN and their children Robert Jr. of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and Douglass of Piperton, TN; John Stephen Douglass of Louisville, KY; Dr. Clive Gie, wife Lindy of Upton, England and their children Noel Gie, wife Natalie of Los Angeles, CA and their children Tegan and Imogen; Grant Gie, wife Nicki of London, England and their children Lola and Tabitha; Paul Gie, wife Katie of London, England and their children Isla and Campbell.
