He is preceded in death by his parents, James Murray and Mary Frances Pate, and by five of his siblings, James Murray Pate Jr., June Waynick, Nancy Anderson, Bobby Pate, and Donna White.
Charlie was a lifelong Jacksonian. He graduated from Jackson High School in 1951 where he participated in all sports and a lot of pranks. He was especially proud to have been a quarterback for the Jackson Golden Bears. He proudly served in the United States Army and the Tennessee National Guard. He was a District 4 locomotive engineer and retired from Illinois Central Gulf Railroad in 1995.
In addition to being a sportsman, Charlie was an avid outdoorsman. He began fishing and hunting at a very early age. He was a member of Quail’s Unlimited and Ducks Unlimited; he loved going to the meetings where he and his buddies would share their “large” fish tales. He also loved spending time at his farm where his family, including grandkids, would congregate each May to help harvest the strawberry crop. Charlie was a generous man and gladly shared the fruits of his labor or the catch of the day with friends and neighbors.
Charlie pursued all of his interests years after retirement, but his greatest passion was his family. He loved large family gatherings at his home, especially Christmas. He relished in his role as a grandfather and was affectionately called Gramps. His family and friends will miss his witty sense of humor and the great stories he told, along with the fatherly advice he dished out to one and all.
Charlie was an active member at Lambuth Memorial United Methodist Church.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jackie Pate; four children; Terry Archer (Doug) of Collierville,Tn; Debbie Pate of Jackson, Tn; Chuck Pate, of Jackson Hole, WY; and Liz Hamby of Venice FL.
He is survived by six grandchildren; Carly Archer, Kyle Archer (Jordan), Andrew Archer, Charles Pate (Josie), Meg Hamby, and Olivia Pate; and two great grandchildren, Amelia Pate and Noah Archer.
Charlie is also survived by three siblings: Frances Sullivan, Billy Pate and Peggy Sipes, all of Jackson, Tennessee.
The Pate Family would especially like to thank the staff at the Tennessee State Veterans Home in Humboldt, Tennessee for their compassionate care and the genuine affection they had for their Paw Paw. There will never be another resident like him!
