John W. Salter Jr., age 81 passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2024. John was born in Jackson, MS, January 14, 1943, to John W. Salter, Sr. and Lillian Spain Salter. He was born while his father was serving his country in the Pacific Theater with the U.S. Navy during WWII. Once the war was over, his family settled in Port Gibson, MS, where he attended school, graduating in 1960. John attended Mississippi State University, earning a B.S. in Industrial Engineering as well as a B.S. in Business Administration. He met his love, Ginny, while attending MSU, and they married in 1964.
John accepted a job with AT&T upon graduation, and he and Ginny moved to Birmingham. After working for 1 year, John received his orders to report for 2 years of active duty with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was assigned to the Navajo Army Depot in Flagstaff, AZ, where he would serve as a next of kin officer for the northern 1/3 of Arizona. He spoke of this as the most difficult job he ever had, but he was honored to serve his country, fellow soldiers, and their families.
After completing his active-duty requirement of 2 years, John returned to work with AT&T in Atlanta, GA. He and Ginny moved many times, as AT&T transferred John to new locations. In 1973, while living again in Atlanta, John decided it was time to establish roots for his family without the frequent relocations. He moved his family to Jackson, MS, where he began his own business as a home builder. This was his occupation until he retired many years later.
John attended Morrison Heights Baptist Church in Clinton, MS, for more than 20 years, where he and Ginny made many dear friends. He spent much of his time working on his physical fitness, but he also enjoyed the social aspect of visiting with friends at the gym. He loved his MSU Bulldogs, and he and Ginny enjoyed watching football games each fall. He was a great home builder and took pride in producing a quality home for his customers. He and Ginny were married for 59 years; they both expressed many times how they didn’t want to live without the other. The family is saddened by the loss of our Pop so soon after losing Ginny in December of 2023; but we rejoice that they are now together again in heaven.
John is preceded in death by his parents, John and Lillian Salter. He is survived by his sister, Virginia Selden (Ronny); brother Jimmy (Juliette); sister Shirley Clark; son, Mike Salter; daughter, Stacie Brinson (Jim); He and Ginny have 5 grandchildren: Scarlett Salter, Katie Brown, Sophie Salter, Kellar Brown, and Hayden Salter.
A visitation for John will be held Friday, June 28, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Lakewood Funeral Home, 6011 Clinton Blvd, Jackson, Mississippi 39209. A visitation will occur Saturday, June 29, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM with a funeral service to follow.
