John Armstead Noel, Jr., 76, died on July 12, 2024 at his home in Clinton, MS after a long battle with colon cancer. A native Jacksonian raised in the Jackson Public Schools, he graduated from Murrah High School in 1966, from the University of Mississippi with a BBA in Accounting and Business Management in 1970 and, in later life, graduated with an MBA from Tulane in 2005.
He was most recently a Producer with the Hub International Insurance Agency in Ridgeland. A lifelong insurance professional, with CPCU and CLU designations, he was initially employed by Nugent and Pullen, and after that was employed by the Reynolds-Noel Insurance Agency which eventually became his own. He carried his book of business, with many long-term clients, during this 50 year insurance in a series of buyouts and mergers to the Chandler Sampson Howard and Ashcraft, Davis and Goulet, Bryson, and Hub International agencies. He held statewide insurance professional offices, taught license-obtaining programs, and served as a mentor to some of his employees, encouraging them and assisting them in obtaining their own insurance designations.
A lifelong, religiously devout man, he was a member of Galloway Methodist Church where he attended and taught Sunday School throughout most of his early and middle adulthood. Later, he became a regular attender at Wells Methodist Church, being a greeter, every Sunday, for many years until the last few weeks of his life. He also held an independent bible study class, outside of church, for many years.
One of his most prominent interests was genealogy, being equally interested in all branches of his ancestry. This took the form of semi-regular trips to his father’s ancestral area of many generations, Greene County, Indiana, various research in Jackson and Natchez, and researching ancestral papers held in the library at Tulane. Later in life, he enjoyed a trip with his cousin, Nancy Norwood of Rochester, NY, to ancestral Sligo County, Ireland. He also taught genealogy classes at various locations, usually in the Jackson-Hinds library system. Other interests included hunting and fishing, and collecting firemarks, decoy ducks, and vintage writing utensils, especially the Schaeffer brand (a tie to one of his father’s employers). He enjoyed trips to see his son in Canada, particularly liking Quebec City.
He is survived by his wife of over 40 years, Deborah (Coleman) Noel of Clinton, former wife Donna (Shreve) Stremke of Fort Myers, FL, son William Bryan Noel of Fort Myers, FL, stepson Jonathan Wesley Guymon of Florence, nephew John Campbell McLaurin III of Little Rock, AR, niece Elizabeth Carol McLaurin of Pearl, and brothers-in-law Mike Mockbee Jr. of Jackson and John Campbell McLaurin Jr. of Pearl. He was predeceased by his parents, John Armstead Noel Sr. of Linton, IN and Estelle (Pullen) Noel of Jackson, his daughter Brandi Chase Noel, most recently of Frisco, TX, both of his sisters – Estelle (Noel) Mockbee of Jackson and Carol (Noel) McLaurin of Pearl – and nephew, Michael Morgan Mockbee III of Jackson. The Noel family request in lieu of flowers, contributions in John's memory may be made to Methodist Children's Home of Mississippi, https://www.mchms.org/ways-to-give/donate-now/.
A memorial gathering for John will be held Saturday, July 20, 2024 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Lakewood Funeral Home, 6011 Clinton Blvd, Jackson, Mississippi 39209.
