David Lynn Harkness

He is survived by his wife, of sixty years, Mary Glynn Powell Harkness, Daughter Kathy Johns (Jimmy), son Kevin Harkness (Rachel), and three granddaughters Lindsey, Kelly, and Katie Powell and a step granddaughter Blake Bell, two sisters, Martha Tate (Billy), Schwanda Foster, and one brother Donnis Harkness (Sybil), and a host of nieces and Nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Rebecca and Ervin Harkness, three brothers, James, Ross, and Leighton Harkness, and one sister Anne Simmons.

The family would like to thank his caretaker, Margie Patterson for her dedication to the family and the care she provided to Mr. Harkness.

David “Lynn” Harkness was born on September 20th, 1933 in Ecru, MS and graduated from Ecru High School in 1952. He served in the US Army G-2 Intelligence Pentagon Room. He attended Ittawamba Jr. College and Mississippi State University. Some of his accomplishments included: employment with Southland Oil Co., Executive VP Mid-Continent System, President and Owner of United Oil, United Terminal, MGM Corporation and MGM Oil Inc., President and owner of Harkness Management Corp. He was also Past President and Member of North Jackson Kiwanis Club and Lexington Rotary Club. He served as the Director of Holmes County Selective Service Board, Valley Bank, Tallahatchie County Bank, and Depositors Savings Assc. He also served as Director and Chairman of Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Mississippi Hospital Assc., Board of Mississippi Baptist Enterprise, and a Lifetime Deacon at First Baptist Church Jackson, MS.

Visitation will be Tuesday August 27th, 2013 from 5:00pm to 7:00 pm at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church of Jackson on Wednesday August 28th, 2013 at 11:00am. He will be buried at the family plot in Ecru, MS.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to First Baptist Church of Jackson Mississippi “Vision for Life Fund” at 431 N State St. Jackson, MS 39201.
