Col. Joe Patterson Farris, ARNG, Ret.

Upon graduation from Provine High School in 1959, Joe earned an Accounting degree from Mississippi College and an MBA from Jackson State University. He worked over 30 years for the Mississippi Department of Transportation in various accounting roles, including Chief Financial Officer, culminating his career as Administrative Head.

Colonel Farris proudly served his country for 38 years in the Mississippi Army National Guard. Enlisting in 1960, he attained the rank of First Sergeant, then completed Officer Candidate School in 1970, where he received the Most Outstanding Academic Award. Colonel Farris specialized in Field Artillery, serving as Commander of the 4th Battalion 114th Field Artillery, and Commander of the 631st Field Artillery Brigade. He was inducted into the Ancient Order of Saint Barbara, received the Mississippi Magnolia Cross for meritorious service, as well as many other awards and decorations. His fellow guardsmen remarked on his keen intellect, humble service and willingness to mentor others. Colonel Farris will be remembered as a true patriot and a great American.

Joe’s retirement years were spent with his beloved wife Patricia. Together, they made many fond memories at their favorite vacation spot, Key West. His children and grandchildren could always count on Grandpa to attend birthday parties, recitals and ballgames.

Behind a quiet demeanor, Joe possessed a sharp wit. He had an extensive music collection, particularly classic rock and blues. He enjoyed weekly golf games, and watching the Atlanta Braves.

Colonel Farris is preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Jean Farris, his brother James Richard Farris and his loving wife of 22 years, Patricia Farris.

He is survived by daughter Cindy Crochet of Houston TX and her children Chelsea and Parker, daughter Missy (Jamey) Nettles of Madison AL and their children Kate, Joshua, Jack and Abby, son Thad (Anne Cassell) Watkins of Hoover AL and their children Thad Jr (Hallye) and Allen, and son Everett Watkins of Key West FL, sisters Susie Pettit of Brandon MS, and Jeanie McCrory of Andalusia AL, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is also mourned by Sarah Merry, his first wife and mother of Cindy and Missy, and by his special companion Susan Loyd.

The funeral will be held Thursday, August 18, 2022, at Lakewood Funeral Home, 6011 Clinton Boulevard, Jackson, MS 39209. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 12:00. Following will be funeral services in the chapel and military honors at Lakewood Memorial Park.
