The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at Dunbar Funeral Home in Irmo, South Carolina. After suffering a stroke, Nancy died peacefully Thursday, February 22, 2018 surrounded by family and friends.
Nancy was the devoted wife of Ernest Wendell Clamp, Jr. for fifty-three years. Nancy was also the loving mother of Carol Clamp Hill and Elizabeth Clamp Black and mother-in-law of Robert Raymond Hill, Jr. and Kevin James Black. Known as "Mimi," she was the adoring and caring grandmother of four wonderful grandchildren: Charles Grayson Hill, Robert Haynes Hill, James Gibson Black, and Margaret Elizabeth Black.
Nancy was born on January 1, 1941 in Columbus, Georgia. She was the only child of the late Sam William Gray and Lillie Mae Hardeman Gray. When Nancy was young, the Gray family moved to Atlanta, Georgia. There, Nancy graduated from North Fulton High School where she participated in numerous musical activities, highlighted by being selected to travel with a small choral group to perform in Europe on two separate occasions. Upon graduation from high school, Nancy attended Tift College in Forsyth, Georgia where she received a B.A. in English and minored in Music. Nancy later received a Master's Degree in Education from the University of South Carolina.
Nancy was married to Wendell on December 20, 1964. When their daughters were young, Nancy taught private piano lessons in the home and played the piano and organ in various churches. After they entered school, she taught music for a total of twenty-eight years in the public school systems of Crisp County, Georgia; Barnwell County, South Carolina; Lexington and Richland School District Five; and Newton County, Georgia. During her nineteen years as a music teacher at Seven Oaks Elementary School in District Five, Nancy was loved and respected by her students, their parents, and her fellow teachers, who elected her Seven Oaks Teacher of the Year. Nancy loved horticulture and knew the names of virtually all the native and ornamental trees, shrubs, and flowers. She also enjoyed spending time at their beach home on Edisto Island as well as following her beloved Clemson Tigers.
Nancy actively participated in numerous church activities wherever she and Wendell lived. In addition to her regular attendance at church and Sunday school, Nancy's daily devotion time set a life-long example for her family. She happily taught children's church choirs for over twenty years and participated in the adult choirs of both First Baptist Church in Covington, Georgia as well as Riverland Hills Baptist Church in Columbia. According to her husband, Wendell, Nancy was a moral and spiritual beacon for her family and friends for many years, always putting the needs of others first and never failing to send devotional books to her children, grandchildren, and other family members each month. All who knew Nancy loved her and will greatly miss her!
For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Riverland Hills Baptist Church Building Program, 201 Lake Murry Boulevard, Columbia, South Carolina 29063, or Gideon's International, P.O. The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and nurses of both Parkridge Medical Center and Palmetto Health Richland for their compassionate care.
