Milton “Pete” Maupin passed away on Friday morning, October 11, 2024, at the age of 92, in Columbia, SC. Born in Free Union, Virginia on January 8, 1932, he was one of ten children born to Cecil and Ora (Loving) Maupin. As a young man, Pete worked on his parents’ farm and in his father’s general store. He remained very close to his family throughout his life, traveling to Free Union each year to visit his parents, fish with his brothers, and enjoy home. Pete attended the University of Virginia and graduated from Bridgewater College with a Chemistry degree in 1954. Upon graduation from college, he attended Officers Candidate School and received a commission as a Naval officer. He served in active duty until 1957 and in reserve duty for 25 years, retiring as a full Commander. While in active service, Pete traveled to the port of Miami, Florida and fell in love with the pristine beaches and warm weather. After retiring from active duty, Pete made Miami his new home and went to work for Sears, Roebuck and Co. There, he met a beautiful young woman, Theresa “Terry” Thornburgh, whom he married in 1958. They had two beloved children, Mark and Susan. Pete worked for Sears for 36 years, ultimately settling in Orlando and retiring as the regional distribution center manager in 1993.
Pete gave of himself throughout his life though Rotary, the United Way, the Elks Club, volunteering at the concession stand at high school football games, in the University of Florida’s Master Gardener program, and in the church’s men’s club. Pete loved the outdoors and spent every chance he could bass fishing on the St. John’s River and working in his yard, grafting citrus trees and planting strawberry patches for their Schnauzer, Schnappsy. Pete and Terry moved to Chapin, SC in 2011 and became fast friends with their wonderful neighbors and church family at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. He loved boating in Lake Murray, taking Sunday drives and spending time with Terry, and going to breakfast with his men’s breakfast group each Tuesday morning.
Family was central to Pete’s life and it brought him tremendous joy. He reinforced that in his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, all of whom called and visited frequently. Pete was dearly loved and he will be greatly missed by all who knew and adored him. Pete is survived by Terry, his wife of 66 years; his children, Mark (Carla) and Susan (Trey) Boone; grandchildren, David (Tiffany) and Tiffany (Forrest) Revolinski; step grandchildren, Jennifer and Sarah Boone; five great grandchildren, Emersyn and Reese Maupin, and Miles, Sloane and Liam Revolinski; and his dog Missy.
