The son of Lee Cothran, Sr. and Gertrude Whitt Cothran was born in Aiken County on April 28, 1935 and grew up in Laurens County SC. He and his wife, Faye Abercrombie Cothran were married June 2, 1956.
Lee graduated from Ware Shoals High School. He earned an Associate Bachelor of Arts from North Greenville College, a Bachelor of Arts from Erskine College, and a Master of Divinity from the Chandler School of Theology, Emory University. He completed Advanced Studies in Clinical Pastoral Education at the Marshall Memorial Mental Health Center in Greenville, the State Hospital in Columbia and Industrial Counseling in Spindale NC.
He served as a pastor in the United Methodist Church for 63 years at Lebanon - Oak Hill Charge (south Greenville County), St. Paul (Easley), Starr-Ruhamah– Hebron charge (Starr), Piedmont Park (Greenville), Piedmont (Piedmont), St John (Blacksburg), Pine Grove – Shiloh Charge (Turbeville), St John (Lugoff), Aldersgate (Sumter), Grace (Pickens), Bethel (Walterboro) and Butler – Shiloh Charge (Saluda).
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Faye, his parents, 3 brothers and 4 sisters. He is survived by his son, Chris Cothran of Irmo, former daughter-in-law Jeanne Cothran of Irmo, granddaughter Jillian Cothran Heard (James) of Opelika AL, great-grandchildren Joel and Annalise, grandson Clark Cothran of Irmo, sisters Olive Davis, Pat Abrams (Joe) and Vivian McClellan (CW), and his extended Abercrombie family.
Lee was a loving pastor, and loving, dedicated husband, father, and adoring Papa (grandfather and great-grandfather). He was truly one of the most compassionate and caring friend to all and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
A visitation will be held Thursday, July 18, 5-7 pm at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel. A funeral service will be held on Friday July 19, 11 am at Union United Methodist Church, Woodrow Street in Irmo. Entombment will be at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Serenity Mausoleum in Greenville at 11 am on Saturday July 20th.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the building fund of Shiloh Methodist Church or Butler Methodist Church, Saluda SC.
