Karen Holder Monts, 74, of Irmo, South Carolina passed away June 26, 2024 surrounded by her family. She was born February 14, 1950 in Spartanburg, SC and was the daughter of the late Morris and Willie Mae Lancaster of Pauline, SC.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years John David Monts, her sons Glenn Monts of Atlanta, GA and Clay Monts (Carmen) of Chapin, SC, and two grandchildren Ellie and Dylan Monts of Chapin, SC. Karen is also survived by her sister Jenny Toney (Barry) of Spartanburg, SC, brothers Marshall Holder (Phyllis) of Pauline, SC, Thomas Lancaster (Katie) of Pauline, SC, sister-in-law Debra Ailes of Irmo, SC, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Karen retired from a career in the Federal Court System, where she served several different roles over thirty years. She enjoyed her coworkers and remained friends with many of them post-retirement. She was also a fifty year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a longtime member of Salem United Methodist Church in Irmo, SC.
Karen had a passion for gardening. She tended her plants daily and delighted in sharing her botanical knowledge with others. She enjoyed a number of other hobbies including cooking, sewing, playing golf, and cheering for the Gamecocks. Karen’s greatest joy was her family, especially her grandchildren who affectionately call her KK. Her legacy of kindness, positivity, and faith will remain with all those who were fortunate to know her.
A visitation for Karen will be held Monday, July 1, 2024 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, 7600 Woodrow St. Irmo, SC 29063. A funeral service will occur Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at 10:00 am at Salem United Methodist Church, 1321 Salem Church Rd Irmo, SC 29063, with a private family burial to follow.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Salem United Methodist Church or Sharing God’s Love at PO BOX 1021, Irmo, SC 29063.
