James Marvin Kirby (Jim), age 76, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2021. He was born in Greenville County to the late Truman and Irene Kirby. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Annette; two children, Jay (Tyra) of Hendersonville, North Carolina and Courtney Mobley (Jared) of Charlotte, North Carolina; and five beautiful grandchildren: Carson, Madison, Trey, Macon and Ellis. Upon the birth of his first grandchild, Carson, Jim was thereafter referred to as “Pops” and Pops loved his grandchildren immensely and unconditionally.
Jim was a proud graduate of the University of South Carolina, where he played baseball.
Jim began a lifetime of public service serving and leading human service organizations, including the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs, Lutheran Family Services of the Carolinas, and the South Carolina Commission for the Blind.
A celebration of life will be held at Riverland Hills Baptist Church on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at 11:00 a.m., with a visitation for family and friends prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the South Carolina Commission for the Blind Foundation, Attn: SCCB Foundation, 1430 Confederate Avenue, Columbia SC 29212, or Riverland Hills Baptist Church Missions, 201 Lake Murray Boulevard, Irmo, SC 29063.
