Laverne was born on October 24, 1935, in Henrietta, Texas. Her parents were Vernon and Martha Benton Collins. She lived in Wichita Falls, Texas, until the age of 10, then moved to Portland, Oregon, where she eventually met and married her husband, Bennie, on July 2nd, 1954. They then moved to Lancaster, Texas.
Surviving family members include her sister, Barbara Pence, son Marshall Smithson, daughter Sherrie Porter, and grandkids Michael Porter, Sarah Porter, Hope Porter, Tiffany Aaron, Melissa Taylor, Nathan Smithson, Eric Smithson, Josh Smithson, and Brandi Ellis. As well as 25 great-grandkids, 3 great-great-grandkids, and one more great-grandchild on the way!
She is preceded in death by her parents, Vernon and Martha Benton Collins; her husband Bennie James Smithson; her brothers Billy Ray Collins and Bob Collins; her son, Rocky Smithson; and her grandson, Rocky Smithson Jr.
Laverne never met a stranger and was loved by anyone who met her. She was an excellent cook and great at any craft. She especially enjoyed painting. She was part of great Easter set designs at the Sulphur Springs Church of God. She loved the Lord and enjoyed attending church with her family. Her favorite hymn was "In the Garden."
