It is with deep sadness that we, her siblings, announce the peaceful death of our sister Margaret Elizabeth MacLennan of Calgary/Deepdale on October 9, 2019 with her family by her side. Born on the 29th of September, 1960, Margaret was the daughter of the late Sally (MacKinnon) and Hugh MacLennan.
Margaret is survived by her sister, Sandra (Paul), Bedford; and her brothers, Roddie (Marian), Bedford; Steve (Margie), Margaree; John (Monica), Blues Mills; Jerry (Colleen), Quispamsis, NB; Fr. Danny, Parish Priest in Mabou; Bruce (Laura), Oakville. Margaret was also truly proud of her nieces and nephews, Shawn, Shauna, Aaron, Sarah, Andrea, Katie, Angus, Margaret, Michael, Ellen, Kathleen, Cheryl, Brian and Brenda; and great-nieces, Kenzie and Claire; great-nephews, David and Johann. Margaret was lovingly included as a family member in Calgary by cousin Joy (MacIsaac) and Diego Romero and their children and families. In addition to her parents, Margaret was predeceased by her brothers, Alexander (1990) and Gus (1993); and her nephew, Brendan (2002).
Margaret was educated in Dunvegan School, Inverness Consolidated and Mabou Consolidated. From there she left to work briefly in Toronto, Whitehorse and lastly, made her home in Calgary, where she was a valued employee for 29 years with Wastewater Treatment & Water Services Dept. for the City of Calgary. No work was too much for Margaret whether mowing the fields on a hot summer’s day on Pipers Lane, shoveling snow for her Calgary relations and the elderly in her neighbourhood – she loved to help others. Margaret made many good friends along the way.
Margaret enjoyed the outdoors. She loved walking and biking and every trail in Calgary was familiar to her. There was nothing she loved more than spending vacation days in Deepdale, walking Inverness beach, picking blueberries and attending Sunday mass in Broad Cove - simple things which caused her such great joy. She spent some time travelling and her best trips were to visit her brother, Fr. Danny, during his time in Dublin. Sadly, Margaret’s gentle lifestyle came to a halt when she was diagnosed with gastric cancer. Margaret was determined to live and religiously followed the advice of her doctor in Calgary and also the team in Halifax. The cancer however did not heed this advice and as a result our proud sister succumbed to the disease.
We would like to acknowledge and thank the Palliative Care Team on Floor 7A at the VG in Halifax and the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, Foothills Hospital in Calgary.
It was Margaret’s request to be cremated and that has occurred. Visitation will be held Sunday October 13th, from 2 – 4 PM and 7 – 9 PM at the Inverness Funeral Home, Inverness, NS. Funeral mass will be celebrated at St Margaret of Scotland Church, Broad Cove, NS on October 14th at 11 AM, with her brother, Fr. Danny MacLennan officiating with Parish Priest, Fr. Dan MacDonald. Margaret will be laid to rest in Broad Cove where her beloved family and friends are interred.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Palliative Care of your choice or the Broad Cove Cemetery Fund. Please also, take the time to enjoy a walk in your community in memory of our dear Margaret.
