It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of “The Sweet Gentleman” from Deepdale.
Donald John "Donnie" MacLellan-53- passed away peacefully Thursday, September 8 in Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital. He had been a resident for a short time at the Inverary Manor.
Donnie was a son of the late Dan and Margaret (Coady) MacLellan, Deepdale.
He is survived by his 5 sisters and 1 brother, Kay MacLellan, Windsor, On; Susan (Aaron) Gaudet, Bridgewater; Linda (Brian) MacMillan, Port Hood; Judy (Warren) Leadbetter, Port Hood; Barbara (Stephen MacDonald) MacLellan, Fall River; Peter (Christy) MacLellan, Edmonton, AB, and a special aunt who is also his godmother, Jessie Tompkins, NE Margaree.
He was a caring uncle to his 4 nephews and 5 nieces, Jason, Mike, Nicole, Sarah, Coady, Alaura, Josh, Miagh and Winnie. Also 7 grand nephews: London, Ace, Cole, Desmond, Rory, Grayson and Declan.
Donnie loved his pets especially his last feline friend Ka’la.
Donnie was predeceased by a baby brother of the same name and his brother-in-law Lloyd MacLellan.
Donnie was a dedicated worker at the Shean Co-op for 12 years, where everyone knew him for his helping attitude. He certainly missed working with this group of people. Donnie also worked at the Strathlorne Tree Nursery for 24 years, where again he acquired many friends.
Donnie was an avid horse racing fan. He could always be found at the Inverness Raceway during the race season. A big thank you to the Inverness Horsemen for the recent designated parking spot by the finish line.
Donnie was a huge Montreal Canadians fan always sporting his team’s colours. He also loved the Blue Jays, Raptors and his Detroit Lions. He always enjoyed the sports rivalry between family and friends.
Donnie was a helpful member to the Knights of Columbus and the Inverness C. B. Club. He always loved to participate in the many community events, especially Bingo.
Donnie never complained about his terrible diagnosis of ALS. He accepted it very stoically and he tried to live his best life, always with a smile for everyone.
We would like to extend a special thank you to the Palliative Care team, Dr. Ritter, Lori Anne and Lindsay. Also to all the wonderful people who cared for him at the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital, the Inverary Manor, the Community Care Workers and his nurse practitioner Mary Anderson. We want to thank his neurologist Dr. Shaun Taylor and the team at the Halifax Rehab Centre for their care. Many thanks to the ALS Society for their guidance and support.
Visitation will take place in Inverness Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 13 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.. Funeral Mass will follow on Wednesday, September 14 in Stella Maris Catholic Church, Inverness at 11 a.m. with Father Daniel Tshimbalanga officiating. Immediately following there will be a reception at the Inverness Fire Hall. His burial will be at 2 pm Saturday, September 17 in Stella Maris Parish Cemetery.
