It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our mother, Annie Helena Marie MacMillan, who passed away peacefully Wednesday morningat Inverness Hospital; her children at her bedside. Annie was the daughter of the late Alex and Sadie (MacDougall) Arbuckle. She was predeceased by her brothers Danny, Jackie, and Angus Neil Arbuckle, and Pat Williams; her husband John MacMillan of Hawthorne; and her son-in-law, Bill Mouland. She is survived by her sister, Mary (Joe) Beaton; her children, Eddy (Simone) MacMillan, Francis MacMillan and Diane Mouland; her grandchildren, Tracy (Ernie) MacMillan, O.J. (Elisabeth) MacMillan, Neil (Donna) MacMillan, Ann Margaret (Gideon) MacMillan, Curtis (Shana) Lamorie, Jillian Lamorie, Jenny (Tim) Mouland Dahl, Gerald (Kyra) Mouland, Jessie and Dillon MacMillan; her great grandchildren, Myranda, Leah, Riley, Madison, Allie, Rayna, Everley, Skylar, Jo-Lee and George; nieces, nephews and extended family.
She had great respect for life and all that it had to offer. She appreciated the outdoors and loved her home in Hawthorne, where she woke up to the sound of birds. She fed the rabbits, tended to her flowers and enjoyed the fresh air on her little deck listening to the sound of running water in the brook. She swam in the sea, literally danced in the rain to celebrate her 80th birthday and found peace in knowing that all was well in her world.
Mom genuinely loved people and had a great sense of humour. She appreciated every kind gesture and made lifelong friends in her travels. She had strong faith and was a member of the Catholic Women’s League for over 50 years. She prayed for the sick, the lonely and the troubled at heart. She worked at Mary’s Hill Home in Mabou and was an excellent caregiver, friend and neighbour. She was also a member of the Glencoe Station Hall. She supported her community, attended all local events and loved a good game of cards, country music, Celtic music, dancing and telling stories. She especially enjoyed visiting relatives in her birthplace of Ingonish.
We would like to thank Dr. Susie Egar for her excellent care and compassion, the nursing staff at Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital, and the Critical Care Unit at Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Special thanks to her friends and neighbours at Reynold Street in Port Hood where she resided for the past two years. Your kindness and support are greatly appreciated.
Cremation has taken place and a private family graveside service will be held at St. Peter's Parish Cemetery in Port Hood on Friday, July 2nd at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Vincent VanZutphen and Fr. Eugene Morris officiating. This service will be for close family members only, please, due to COVID restrictions. If inclement weather, the service will be moved to the church.
