Robert Edward Johnson Sr.

Born in New York City, November 7, 1925. Passed away in Indianapolis, Indiana, June 14, 2011. Enlisted October 11, 1943; NTS Sampson, NY through Signalman School; commissioned LSM-38. Retired USN as E-8 (QMCS) after 24 years of service. Employed by Virginia Port Authority Police Department, and retired as a captain after 20 years. Presently he was employed as a family genealogist. Some of Roberts’s most memorable experiences were delivering Pearl Harbor death telegrams for Western Union in Brooklyn on December 8, 1941. His Navy experiences were aboard LSM-38 during WWII; on USS Newport News (CA-148) at 1965 Cuban Blockade, other ships he served on were USS Lejeune (AP-74), USS Myles C. Fox (DDR-829). As a police officer in 1971 he arrested a jewel thief at Norfolk Airport. Robert is preceded in death by his wife Marge Johnson who passed away in 1985. After 45 years in Norfolk, VA, he moved to McCordsville, Indiana to be with his son and family. He is survived by his son Robert E. Johnson Jr., his wife Sonja, two grandchildren, Rachel and Nicole, and two great grandchildren, Kayden and Emma. He is also survived by his brother Peter Johnson, of New York and his sister Rosemary Esposito, of Arizona. Services entrusted to Feeney-Hornak Shadeland Mortuary.
