Dick attended Arsenal Tech High School in Indianapolis. He often tells stories of how he was a bit of a rebel in school, getting lots of reprimands from his teachers. He met Betty Jean Ittner while hanging with friends at the Riviera Club in Indianapolis, and later married the true love of his life on August 13, 1950. He served in the US Navy from 1947-1952 aboard the USS Missouri and in the Naval Air Wing 824 Kwajlein, M.I. He was a proud Navy veteran and was excited in 2015 to take an honor flight to Washington DC to reflect and visit the memorials commemorating all veterans.
Dick started his career with Speedway Volkswagen in the 1950’s and later worked and retired 2001 from Southeastern Trailways. He loved working in the tourism industry, and he and Betty spent many years traveling the country exploring all the exciting wonders. He truly didn’t know a stranger…loved talking to everyone he met!
He was very involved with the Boy Scouts of America, and was a life -long boy scout. He served in many roles, including Boy Scout Leader and Commissioner, and later was awarded the Wood Badge as well as Silver Beaver awards. He was an avid Model Railroad enthusiast and was a member of the National Model Railroad Association. He loved building his train layouts, and creating magical displays…which he sometimes took to various train shows. He especially loved showing his granddaughters the trains, and tirelessly tried to keep them running for the girls. He was an active member of the Toastmasters, WWII Roundtable, and stamp club. He was the recipient of an Honorary Attorney General Award by Linley Pearson, and received recognition for service to the Memorial Foundation for the USS Indianapolis, as well as from the VFW National Convention held in Indianapolis in 1992. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion. He was named a Kentucky Colonel in 1984.
He and Betty Had 2 children, Daniel Butters of Indianapolis and Carrie Butters (Brownfield) of West Chester, Ohio. They were his pride and joy, until the arrival of his two granddaughters, Alexa Brownfield of Reading, Ohio and Alana Brownfield of Hamilton, Ohio.
Dick is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Russell and Robert, and many wonderful friends and family members.
