Michael Hornak, 88, of Indianapolis, Indiana departed this life on Tuesday, August 27, 2024. He was born April 9, 1936 in Mocarany, Slovakia to the late Michael and Mary Evancho (Fabian) Hornak. Mike was raised in Gary, Indiana area and had worked in the steel mills growing up. He was a graduate of Indiana University where he was a member of Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity. He later earned a degree in mortuary sciences at Indiana College of Mortuary Science. Mike had owned and operated Feeney-Hornak Mortuaries with his brother-in-law, Mike Feeney for 54 years. On June 11, 1960, Mike married Mary Lou Feeney at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
He was devoted to his faith and family and was a longtime and dedicated member of St. Matthew Catholic Church where he had served on the parish council. Previously, he was a longtime and dedicated member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church where he also served on the parish council, coached CYO basketball and kickball. He was also a member of M.A.F.I.A. – Mother and Fathers in Action, Serra Club, Hillcrest Country Club, St. Pius X Knights of Columbus #3433 where he had served as Grand Knight in 1975, the Indiana Funeral Directors Association and the board of Indianapolis Catholic Cemetery Association.
Mike was a kind and gentle soul who served his community often at the worst moments of their lives. He was always compassionate, thoughtful and dignified. He was proud to have recorded three holes-in-one on the golf course. He loved being a season ticket holder of IU Football, Butler Basketball and the Indianapolis Colts. Mike was happiest being with his family and making meaningful memories with them.
Mike was preceded in death by his brother John Hornak, step-brother, Michael Fabian and step-sister, Joanne Malis; brothers-in-law, Dr. Martin Feeney and Diane Feeney. Richard Webster, Michael J. Feeney.
Mike is survived by his best friend of 64 years, Mary Lou Hornak; beloved children, Michael “Mick” Hornak, John (Vikki) Hornak, Tom (Cynthia) Hornak and Mary Beth (Michael) Keiser; grateful grandchildren, Ian (Callie Beighley) Hornak, Angela Thompson, Courtney Thompson, Brittany Thompson, Michael (Payton) Hornak, Alexa Hornak and Katie Keiser; Five great grandchildren; dear sisters-in-law, Patti Webster and Mary Feeney as well as a host of dear friends and colleagues.
Visitation for Mike will be from 4-8 pm on Monday, September 2nd at Feeney-Hornak Keystone Mortuary (71st & Keystone). Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 1:00pm on Tuesday, September 3rd at St. Matthew Catholic Church (56th & Binford). Interment follows at Calvary Cemetery.
