78, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2018. He was born June 26, 1940. Merle served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War as a Military Policeman. He graduated from Michigan State University & worked as a detective for the Michigan State University Police Department until his retirement. To say he loved his Michigan State Spartans would be an understatement! He met the love of his life, Darlene Altherr Lemon during his retirement while living in Florida. They were married for almost 18 years and were always together. Merle loved to read, loved to tell stories, and loved being with his wife’s family, whom he willingly & gratefully accepted without question. In addition to his beloved wife, Merle is also survived by his daughter Kristine (Steve) Black and grandson Travis Black of Barrington, IL. His wife’s children, Kelly Altherr, Ruth (Dan) Rench, Angela (Dan) Janke, Maureen (Dan) Lenahan, Kerry Altherr, Eric (Allison) Altherr; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Edwin) Tirona, Ryan (Kelly) Giebel, Alex Altherr, Sarah Altherr, Morgan (Josh) Hannoy, Kalyn (Tom) Warren, Jordan Bills, Noah Rench, Anna Janke, William Altherr, and Audie Altherr; and 11 great-grandchildren whom he adored. Services will be Saturday, November 24 at 2pm with visitation from 12 until 2pm at Feeney-Hornak Keystone Mortuary.
