Maris was born on May 8, 1926, in Sharpsburg, IL to the late Arpie L. Wilson, Sr. and Dorothy Fremgen Wilson. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Corless (Bud/Alex) Alexander, an infant granddaughter, three sisters Arlene Houghtby, Bernadine Wilson and Natalie Lumb, two brothers Arpie L. Wilson, Jr. and Lee Benjamin Wilson. She is survived by her daughter, Dixie Oberlin (Steven Oberlin) and several nieces and nephews.
A 1944 graduate of Edinburg High School, Maris attended Illinois State University and completed several extensions courses through the University of Missouri. She completed her Illinois teaching certificate which enabled her to be a substitute teacher in Wilmington, Illinois and sometimes in Dixie’s grade school classes. Her first employment after college was in the Comptroller’s Office at Franklin Life Insurance Company in Springfield and she retired from the Illinois State Board of Education. As a younger woman living in Illinois, Maris enjoyed teaching Sunday School, being active in the Mary Todd Unit of Home Extension and the Springfield Women’s Writing Group. Her hobbies included quilting, studying the Bible, creative writing and bridge.
A memorial visitation for Maris will be held Monday, December 30, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Church at the Crossing, 9111 Haverstick Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46240, followed by a Memorial service at 11:00 AM.
