John D. Shelton, Jr., was born on December 28, 1937, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to John D. Shelton, Sr. and Martha Jane Shelton, both deceased. John attended Indianapolis Public Schools, and graduated from Shortridge High School in the class of 1955, where he played basketball and ran track. In 1959, he graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN, with a degree in Liberal Arts. He also pledged Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
After graduation, John taught English and Math at Indianapolis Public School No. 44. He also coached the basketball team. During the early 1960s, John attended St. Rita Catholic Church where he was Baptized and received his First Communion.
In 1997, John retired from the City of Indianapolis, Department of Public Works. John enjoyed spending time with friends and family, working crossword puzzles, watching old western movies, dancing, and listening to the “Oldies But Goodies” songs from the 1950s and 1960s.
John departed this life on October 6, 2019, at the age of 81. He was preceded in death by his parents John D. Shelton, Sr. and Martha Jane Shelton, and his brother Michael D. Shelton, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn A. Shelton; children, John D. Shelton, III, and Christi A. Pierce (Isaac); brother Paul E. Shelton (Lillie); grandchildren, John D. Shelton, IV, Crystal P. Shelton, Audrey J. Shelton, and Rachel A. Pierce; great-granddaughter, Zoey A. Duty; several nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
