John Sterling Null, age 86, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on August 13, 2024. John was born in Benton Harbor, Michigan, on May 5, 1938 to John Fredrick and Elna Doster Null. He graduated from BHHS in 1956 and entered the U.S. Army’s six month program. He attended DePauw University as a Rector Scholar where he married Nancy Spier in 1960 and graduated in 1961. He first worked for U.S. Steel Corp., becoming a salesman in Chicago. In 1969, he joined his father-in-law and brother-in-law at H.J. Spier Co. Inc. in Indianapolis. Two years later he entered the evening division of Indiana University Law School in Indianapolis, earning his J.D. in 1974. He became a member of the Indiana State Bar that same year.
As he always said, he had a wonderful life because of his loving family, good friends, customers, dedicated employees and partners. John was an active alumni of DePauw University and his chapter of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. He was a longtime member of Highland Golf and Country Club, the 435 Group, the City Club of Indianapolis, and various other organizations.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy (Spier) Null and their three sons and their families: John David (Kathy) parents to Hayley, Taylor, Jake and Lily; Jim (Christy) parents to Hannah (Jordan Babcock), Grace and Alex; Steve (Jane) parents to Zach, Eli and Ava; great-grandson, Sterling Cooper Babcock. Predeceasing John was his beloved sister, Patricia Null Newland, and her husband, Ralph. Nancy’s deceased brother, Herbert J. Spier, Jr., was John’s business partner for 50 years. John’s cousin S.E. “Duke” Doster, M.D., and family were also a special part of his life.
The family would like to thank all the wonderful caregivers who supported John over the last few years, especially Kim Buckhalter and Kathy Brookins, along with Dr. Kevin McCallum and his staff.
A celebration of his life and legacy will be held at Highland Golf and Country Club on Sunday, August 25th from 2PM-5PM, 1050 West 52nd Street, Indpls.
