Danny Blair Magoun

Dan graduated from Jacksonville High School, Jacksonville, NC, with the class of 1964. He received a B.S. degree in zoology from North Carolina State University in1968.

He married Elizabeth Christine Haire, June 5, 1966, and served in the U.S. Army from February 1969 to October 1975. While serving in Vietnam he earned a number of honors: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal. He was an expert marksman and first class gunner.

Following his service in Viet Nam, Danny and Christine moved to Indianapolis where Danny began his career working with the Indiana State Board of Health. In 1995, Dan began his career in the private sector serving as the Environmental Affairs Manager at National Serv-All Landfill in Fort Wayne, IN, for the Walbridge family.

In 1998, National Serv-All Landfill was acquired by Republic Services. Dan expanded his role to

serve as the Area Environmental Affairs Manager serving Indiana and southern Michigan. He

went on to be a Republic corporate employee, leading the environmental compliance team until

his retirement in 2010. Dan also taught Environmental Waste Management courses for IU and IUPUI as an Adjunct Professor for almost 20 years.

After retirement he enjoyed bicycling, boating, traveling, family gatherings, President of his HOA, and helping others. As a volunteer at Ben Davis Christian Church he planned activities for Senior Adults, assisted with the Church’s Polar Express Christmas program for children in the community, as well as helping with the RIZE program for intercity youth. Danny enjoyed planning activities and vacations as much as taking them. He will be missed by many people.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Christine. Magoun He was the proud father of three daughters: Kimberly Huffman (Loren) of Coverdale, IN, Janelle Barker (Jason) of Reading, PA and Joni Rivera of Avon, IN. He is survived by his younger sisters, Bethany Edwards, Duana McCalment and Sharon Peterman as well as six of his seven grandchildren, Brandt Barker, McKenna Barker, Gavin Barker, Joseph Rivera, Samuel Rivera, and Lia Rivera. He is predeceased by his father Jim Magoun, mother Violet Magoun, and grandson Kyle Jackson.

Danny was a loving husband, father, Papaw and brother. His love for his family extended to his friends, neighbors and his church family. Danny was a strong Christian who showed his love by his actions. He would celebrate with you in times of joy and help you if you ever had a need.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held in his honor at 11:00 AM Saturday, October 12, 2024 at Ben Davis Christian Church at 701 S. High School Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46421. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to his church for the purchase of a new church van to be used for the Seniors and Youth that Danny loved and work with.
