Andrew “Andy” Shiel, 54 of Indianapolis departed this life June 24, 2011. Born in Indianapolis in 1956, Andy was the oldest of five children of Dick & Kenny Shiel. A lifelong resident of Indianapolis, Andy attended St. Joan of Arc School, Cathedral High School and earned his B.S. in Business Administration from Indiana University in 1978.
He was the former Chairman of the Board/CEO (1999-2009) and President (1989-1999) of Shiel Sexton Company.
Andy began working for Shiel Sexton in high school as a laborer and worked his way up through project management, finance and eventually, president.
Andy was very active with several organizations in the community including Cathedral High School, Indianapolis Art Center, Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, Young Presidents Organization, Boy Scouts of America and Associated Builders and Contractors.
“Andy’s spirit remains the spirit of Indianapolis,” said Mayor Greg Ballard. “He worked in the community, for the community. From education to the arts to economic revitalization, Andy reflected the best of what our city has to offer. He will be missed.”
Shiel Sexton underwent significant growth under Andy’s leadership to become one of the region’s largest, most respected contracting organizations. Major projects include Indiana Convention Center Expansion, the Palladium, Lilly Technology Campus Expansion, Emmis Headquarters, FedEx Expansion, WellPoint Headquarters, Bayh Federal Courthouse Renovation and Roche Diagnostics Campus (over 30 years).
Andy’s passion for cultivating trusted relationships in the community and his insistence on having fun continue to define the company culture at Shiel Sexton. The multiple Best Places to Work in Indiana awards were something in which Andy took great pride.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Gail Holloway Shiel; daughters, Maureen (Tony) Knoble and Katherine (Jack Leahy) Shiel; son, James (Bethany) Shiel; mother, Katherine K. Shiel; sisters, Nancy (Doug) Sullivan, Karen (Geoff) Glanders, Mary Claire (J) Chapman and Beth (Eric) Timberlake; grandchildren, Simon Knoble, Andrew T. Shiel, Ethan Lessig and a host of wonderful nieces, nephews family and friends. Andy was preceded in death by his father, Richard C. Shiel.
Visitation for Andy will be from 4 – 8 PM Tuesday, June 28th in the Welch Activity Center at Cathedral High School. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 29th also in the Welch Activity Center. Cremation will follow with final services at Crown Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions for Andy may be made in his name to Cathedral High School, Indianapolis Art Center or to the Crossroads of America Council - Boy Scouts of America. Arrangements entrusted to Feeney-Hornak Keystone Mortuary.
