Larry Unick

Larry was a respected part of his community and well known to people near and far. He spent 40 plus years as the skating rink caretaker and 5 years at the curling rink. There are not many children and adults who passed through AJM Davies arena that didn’t encounter Larry while he cleaned and kept the place running. His neighbors, friends and family always knew they could count on him for a helping hand.

Larry owned and operated Unick Construction for 45 plus years. Slowing down quite a bit in the last handful of years, but would not give up working. He continued his love of painting for Namerind Housing Corp.

He was also known for his love of chocolate, candy, desserts and coffee. Always making sure people were well fed and hyped up on candy. The Toronto Maple Leafs were the love of his life until last season when he also began to cheer for the Edmonton Oilers. He could be found texting someone after a game with a good comment if his team won.

His children and grandchildren will remember him for sitting in his chair singing, playing, watching hockey or the news. Each one of them having their special time to be spoiled and papas “favorite”. They all learned to be kind, patient, generous, hardworking and just all around good people from him.

Larry is survived by his loving wife of 49 years Shirley Unick; son Dwayne (Jersie and Isabelle); daughter Jocelyn and Jared (Jaxyn); son-in-law Cam Thauberger (Adam and Caden); sister Olga (Mike); brothers: Harry (Linda), Jerry, Lloyd and David; sisters-in-law: Merle, Sonia, Judy (Bob), Carla (Barry), Geraldine and Wanda (Ian); brother-in-law Don (Alethia) and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents Dora and Nick Unick; mother-in-law Gladys Racette; father-in-law John Racette; daughter Kim Thauberger; grandsons Theron Webster-Unick and Mason Unick; brothers: Ernie, Peter and Nick; sister-in-law Pauline; brother-in-law Robert Poitras and brother Cecil in infancy.

A huge thank you to the Indian Head EMS for their quick response time, Dr. S. Iskandar, the nurses of IHUH for all their hard work and also to Dr. B. Zimmermann for years of regular appointments and care.

A funeral service and celebration of life will be held in the Indian Head Memorial Hall, Indian Head, Saskatchewan on Friday, November 29, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. The interment will take place in the Indian Head Cemetery, followed by a lunch in the Indian Head Memorial Hall.
