On June 23, 2019, Marshall Tate Aiello died at the age of 33. Born on February 9, 1986 to Kim Jackson and Gregory Aiello, Marshall was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. While Marshall’s father served in the military, he and his family lived in many places including Virginia, Alaska, and England. Because they moved around a lot, Marshall and his two brothers Dylan and Hunter were very close. Marshall loved his family deeply. He often spoke proudly of the beauty and loving nature of his mom, the wisdom and strength of his father, and the adventures of his brothers as they ventured out into the world. He loved his sister in law Heather (wife of Dylan) and hoped they’d soon make him an uncle. He adored children and animals and they always loved him in return.
Marshall had a brilliant mind. He loved reading books on philosophy, religion, and history. He particularly loved math and chemistry. His intelligence was not limited to any one subject. He could skillfully engage in a discussion with nearly everyone he came across, and he came across them often. He was drawn to people and people were always drawn to him. He was beautiful, charming, funny, and incredibly lovable.
When people speak of Marshall, they invariable mention his big heart. He would give anyone the shirt off his back, or more accurately in his case, the shoes off of his feet; which he did on more than one occasion. He cared about people in the purest way. People recall the sheer pleasure of his company, how good he made them feel, and how free they were to be themselves around him.
Marshall was sunshine in our worlds. He’d wander about leaving his sunny fingerprints on everything he touched. Somehow, he forgot how to shine his incredible light inside himself and illuminate the beauty we all saw within him. We all pray he is bathed in that light now and has been reunited with his beloved grandparents Norma and Leonard Jackson, and Carl and Alice Aiello and even his dog Link, whom he adored.
His decision to take his own life – a life of so much promise – was completely unexpected and shocked everyone who knew him. Marshall cared very much about leaving this world a better place. He would want us all to learn and grow from the challenges he faced. We speak honestly of his passing to help end the stigma of mental illness. We are so proud of how hard and courageously he fought battle after battle after battle. He had to be vigilant every single day and the vast majority of days, he was. Marshall would want us to love others better but also to love ourselves better.
Marshall was loved by so many and will be missed terribly by those of us left behind; including his extended family, dear friends, and his girlfriend Audra who he was everything to. We will hold a celebration of his life to remember and honor him at a date to be announced.
